What is a Square?

In mathematics, a square is simply a number multiplied by itself. When we "square" a number, we're performing this specific multiplication. For example, squaring the number 3 means we calculate 3×33 \times 3, which equals 9. We can write this using an exponent, which is a small number written slightly above and to the right of the main number.

Here, the exponent 2 tells us to multiply the base number, 3, by itself. We read 323^2 as "three squared." This works for any number, whether it's a whole number, a fraction, or a negative number. Squaring -4, for instance, gives us (4)×(4)(-4) \times (-4), which equals 16.

Remember, multiplying two negative numbers results in a positive number. So, the square of any non-zero number is always positive.

The Geometry of Squares

The name "square" comes from geometry. A square is a shape with four equal sides and four right angles. The area of a geometric square is found by multiplying its side length by itself. This provides a clear visual for the concept of squaring a number.

If a square has a side length of 5 units, its area is 5×55 \times 5, or 525^2, which is 25 square units. This connection between the algebraic operation and the geometric shape makes the idea of squaring numbers more intuitive. You can physically see what it means to square a number by drawing the corresponding shape.

Perfect Squares

When you square a whole number (an integer like 0, 1, 2, 3, ...), the result is called a perfect square.
