How Your Eyes Really Read

When you read a line of text, it feels like your eyes glide smoothly from left to right. But that's just an illusion. In reality, your eyes move in a series of quick, jerky jumps.

Think of it like a frog hopping across a pond from one lily pad to the next. Your eyes are the frog, and the words are the lily pads. The jumps are called saccades, and the brief pauses on the words are called fixations. It's during these fixations, which last only a fraction of a second, that your brain actually processes the information. You don't see anything at all during the saccades; your brain simply stitches the information from each fixation together to create a seamless experience.

Sometimes, your eyes jump backward to reread a word or phrase. This is called a regression. It happens when you encounter a confusing word or lose your focus. While occasional regressions are normal and even helpful for comprehension, frequent regressions slow you down considerably. Untrained readers can spend up to 30% of their reading time going back over text they’ve already seen.

The Little Voice in Your Head

As you read this, do you hear a voice in your mind sounding out the words? That's called subvocalization. It’s a habit most of us developed in childhood when we learned to read by sounding words out loud. This internal monologue connects the written word to the spoken word, which can be useful for understanding dense or complex material.

However, subvocalization has a major drawback: it's slow. Your reading speed becomes limited by your talking speed, which for most people is around 150 to 250 words per minute. Your brain can actually process information much faster than that. This inner voice, while comfortable and familiar, acts as a bottleneck, preventing you from reaching your full reading potential.

The Speed vs. Comprehension Puzzle

Many people worry that if they try to read faster, they'll stop understanding what they're reading. It's a valid concern, but the relationship between speed and comprehension isn't a simple one-for-one tradeoff. It's more of a curve.

Speed reading programs promise to greatly reduce the time it takes to read, but with great speed may come reduced comprehension, according to researchers.

Reading too slowly can actually hurt comprehension. When your pace is sluggish, your mind has time to wander. You might start thinking about your to-do list or what to have for dinner, and you lose the thread of the author's argument. You end up having to reread paragraphs, not because the material is difficult, but because your focus drifted.

On the other hand, reading too fast will obviously cause you to miss key details and fail to grasp the meaning. There is a sweet spot, an optimal pace where you are reading fast enough to stay engaged and focused, but not so fast that you sacrifice understanding. Finding and widening this optimal range is the key.
