How Reading Works
Reading feels like a single, seamless act. You look at a page, and meaning flows into your mind. But beneath this smooth experience, your brain is running a complex, two-part process. It’s like a skilled musician playing a song; you hear the melody, but they are coordinating finger movements, reading notes, and managing rhythm all at once.
First, your brain has to decipher the symbols on the page. It needs to turn those letters and words into something it recognizes. Second, it has to assemble the meaning behind those words. It connects them to your existing knowledge about the world, grammar, and context. These two jobs happen so quickly and in such close coordination that we rarely notice them as separate steps.
A Simple View of Reading
To better understand this dual process, researchers developed a model called the Simple View of Reading. It’s a powerful formula that explains what reading comprehension is made of.
Let’s break that down:
- D is for Decoding: The ability to accurately read the words on the page.
- LC is for Language Comprehension: The ability to understand the meaning of those words and sentences.
- RC is for Reading Comprehension: The ultimate goal—understanding the text.
The multiplication sign is important. It shows that both decoding and language comprehension are essential. If either skill is zero, the result is zero. You can't have reading comprehension if you can't read the words, nor can you have it if you read the words but don't know what they mean.
Imagine you can decode a sentence in German perfectly but don't speak the language. Your 'D' is high, but your 'LC' is zero. The result? Zero comprehension.
Decoding: From Symbols to Sounds
Decoding is the foundational skill of reading. It's the process of translating written symbols into speech sounds. When a child learns to read, they learn that the letter 'b' makes a /b/ sound. They then learn to blend the sounds of 'c', 'a', and 't' together to say the word 'cat'. This is decoding.

For skilled readers, this process becomes so automatic that it feels like we recognize whole words instantly. We don't consciously sound out 't-a-b-l-e' anymore. Our brains have built a massive library of words we can identify on sight. But this automatic word recognition is built on years of decoding practice. It's the engine that powers fluent reading.
Language Comprehension: Making Meaning
Language comprehension is the other half of the equation. It's your ability to make sense of language. This skill isn't specific to reading; you use it every time you listen to someone speak, watch a movie, or have a conversation. It involves your vocabulary, your understanding of grammar and sentence structure, and your background knowledge about the world.
When you read the sentence, "The cat sat on the mat," your language comprehension skills kick in. You know what a 'cat' is, what 'sitting' looks like, and what a 'mat' is. You understand how the words fit together to describe a scene. If the next sentence is, "It was watching a mouse," you use your background knowledge to infer that the cat might be about to pounce. This is language comprehension at work—weaving individual words into a rich tapestry of meaning.

Both decoding and language comprehension must work together. Weakness in one area can't be fully compensated for by strength in the other. A strong reader is someone who decodes words effortlessly, freeing up their mental energy to focus on the much harder task of comprehending the text's meaning.
