Your brain is designed to forget. In the late 19th century, a German psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus discovered something about memory that every student feels instinctively: the longer you go without thinking about a piece of information, the harder it is to remember.

He tested himself by memorizing lists of nonsense syllables and then tracking how much he forgot over time. The result was the "forgetting curve," a graph that shows how memory retention declines. Immediately after learning something, your recall is high. But within hours, it drops sharply. After a day, you might only remember a fraction of what you learned.

This isn't a flaw. It's a feature. Forgetting frees up mental resources by filtering out information that doesn't seem important. Instead of one ten-hour marathon, you're better off with ten one-hour sessions spread over two weeks. This is the core idea of spaced repetition.

Here’s a simple system:

  1. Learn something new today.
  2. Review it tomorrow. If you remember it easily, schedule the next review three days from now.
  3. When that review comes, if you still remember it, push the next one a week out.
  4. The intervals keep getting longer: one week, two weeks, one month, and so on.
