Spaced repetition is the act of interrupting the forgetting curve. Each time you review information just as you’re about to forget it, you reinforce the memory. The neural pathways that store the information become stronger. With each review, the rate of forgetting slows down. Eventually, the memory becomes part of your long-term knowledge.

Cramming vs Spacing

This leads to another key psychological principle: the spacing effect. Research consistently shows that learning is more durable when it’s spread out over time. When you cram, you're trying to force a lot of information into your short-term memory. It feels productive, but those memories are fragile.

When you space out your study sessions, you give your brain time to consolidate the information, connecting it to what you already know. This creates a much richer, more stable memory. It's the difference between building a house on sand versus building it on a solid foundation.

The goal isn’t to review as often as possible. The goal is to review at the right moment: just before you would have forgotten.
