Solving the Cross on the Bottom
Forget the 'daisy method' you might have seen. We're jumping straight to a more efficient way to build the white cross. The goal is to place the four white edge pieces around the white centre, but with a crucial detail: each white edge piece must also line up with its corresponding side centre piece. We'll build this cross on the bottom face, which will feel upside down at first but sets us up perfectly for the next steps.
First, hold your cube with the white centre on the bottom (D face) and the yellow centre on top (U face). The side centre pieces—blue, red, green, and orange—are fixed relative to each other. If blue is facing you, red is always to your right, and orange is to your left. This never changes, no matter how much you scramble the cube. Understanding this fixed relationship is key.
Your first task is simple: find the four edge pieces that have one white side.
Good Edges vs. Bad Edges
Not all white edge pieces are created equal. We need to think about their orientation. An edge piece has two coloured stickers. For the cross, we're interested in the white/blue, white/red, white/green, and white/orange pieces. Let's call them 'cross pieces'.
A 'good' edge is a cross piece in the top layer (the U face) where the white sticker is facing up. This is the easiest case to solve. Let's say you have the white/blue edge piece in the top layer, with white facing up.
- Rotate the top layer (U or U') until the blue side of the edge piece is above the blue centre piece.
- Now, simply turn that face 180 degrees to bring the edge piece down to the bottom. For the blue face, that's an F2 move.
You've just placed one-fourth of your cross correctly. The edge piece is in the bottom layer, its white sticker is on the bottom face, and its blue sticker is aligned with the blue centre.
A 'bad' edge is a cross piece in the top layer with its non-white sticker facing up. For example, the white/red edge is in the top layer, but the red sticker is on top and the white sticker is on the side. If you just align it over the red centre and do an R2 move, the piece will be in the correct slot, but flipped the wrong way. The white sticker will be on the side, not on the bottom.
To fix this, we use a simple to flip its orientation:
- Move the 'bad' edge so it's on the front face (F face) in the top layer.
- Perform the sequence: F U' R U.
This short sequence places the edge piece correctly. It is now a 'good' edge. The white/red piece is still in the top layer, but now its white sticker faces up. From here, you can solve it just like a 'good' edge: align it over the red centre and do an R2.
Troubleshooting and Preservation
What if a cross piece is already in the bottom layer, but in the wrong spot or flipped incorrectly? First, you need to get it out. If the white/green edge is in the blue edge's slot, for example, just turn the blue face 180 degrees (F2). This moves the white/green piece into the top layer, ready to be solved properly. It also moves whatever piece was in the top layer down, but that's fine. You can now align the white/green piece above the green centre and do a G2 (or equivalent) to place it.
The most important skill is inserting a new piece without messing up the ones you've already placed. Let's say you've already solved the white/red and white/blue edges. Now you're inserting the white/orange edge.
When you align the orange piece over its centre and prepare to do an L2 move, check the top layer. Is there another unsolved cross piece in the spot that's about to be moved down? If so, great. But if a solved piece is there, you need to protect it. Simply do a U or U' move to rotate a 'junk' or unsolved piece into that spot before you do your L2. Then, you can move it back.
When solving the cube, try to keep in mind that you are moving pieces, not stickers.
This thinking is crucial. You're not just colouring faces; you are positioning physical, multi-sided pieces. The cross is the foundation of the entire layer-by-layer method. Aim for efficiency. Can you solve a piece in two moves instead of four? With practice, you'll start to see these intuitively, planning several moves ahead.
