Understanding Your Market

Start with Who, Not What

Before you write a single line of code or design a user interface, the first step is to figure out who you're building for. It's easy to fall in love with an idea, but an idea is only as good as its ability to solve a real problem for real people. This is where market research comes in.

Market research isn't about gathering massive spreadsheets of data. At its core, it's about listening. It’s the process of understanding the world your potential customers live in. What are their goals? What frustrates them? What are they already using to get by? Answering these questions helps ensure you build something people will actually want to use.

Create Your Ideal Customer

You can't build for 'everyone.' The most successful products are designed with a specific person in mind. To do this, you create an Ideal Customer Profile (ICP). This is a detailed, fictional profile of the person who would get the most value from your product. Think of it like creating a main character for a story.

This profile goes beyond basic demographics like age and location. It digs into their professional life, their daily routines, their motivations, and, most importantly, their struggles. What are the specific 'pain points' they face every day that your software could solve? When you have a clear picture of this person, every decision about your product becomes easier. You're no longer guessing; you're solving for them.

To build this profile, you need to talk to people. Conduct interviews, send out surveys, or just observe conversations in online communities where your potential customers hang out. Your goal is to find patterns in their frustrations and needs.

For example, an ICP for a new project management tool might be 'Marketing Manager Maria.' She's 34, works at a mid-sized tech company, and struggles to keep track of deadlines across multiple teams. Her biggest pain point is that current tools are too complex for her team to adopt easily. She needs something simple, visual, and collaborative.

Analyze the Competition

Your idea probably doesn't exist in a vacuum. Understanding the competitive landscape is crucial. This isn't about copying other products. It's about identifying gaps in the market. What are your competitors doing well? Where are they falling short? The weaknesses of other products are opportunities for you.

Make a list of direct and indirect competitors. Direct competitors solve the same problem for the same audience. Indirect competitors solve the same problem but in a different way. Analyze their features, pricing, and what their customers say about them in reviews. This research will help you position your product uniquely.

By mapping out the landscape, you can carve out a space where your product can win by being different and better suited to your ideal customer's needs.

Understanding the user’s needs, personal interests, cultural background and technological proficiency is essential for crafting an AR experience that is relevant, accessible and intuitive for the target audience of a product or service.
