SketchUp Basics
Welcome to SketchUp
Think of SketchUp as a digital pencil for 3D drawing. Instead of sketching on a flat piece of paper, you'll be creating objects in a three-dimensional space. It's an intuitive way to bring ideas to life, whether you're designing a piece of furniture, a room, or an entire building.
When you first open SketchUp, you’ll see a simple workspace. It might look a little empty, but every part has a purpose. Let's get familiar with the key areas.
- Drawing Area: This is your main canvas where you'll build your models.
- Toolbar: Here you’ll find all your essential tools, like the ones for drawing lines and shapes.
- Status Bar: This area gives you tips and information about the tool you're currently using.
- Measurement Box: A powerful little box that lets you enter precise dimensions for your shapes.
Before you draw anything, it's a good idea to set your units. Are you working in feet and inches, or meters and centimeters? You can set this up by going to the 'Model Info' window. For most versions, you can find this under the 'Window' menu. Select 'Units' and choose your desired format and precision. Getting this right from the start saves a lot of headaches later.
Moving Around in 3D
Working in 3D means you need to look at your model from all angles. SketchUp makes this easy with three main navigation tools: Orbit, Pan, and Zoom. Mastering these is the first step to feeling comfortable in the 3D environment. Most people use mouse shortcuts for this, as it's much faster than clicking on the toolbar icons.

Open a new SketchUp file and spend a few minutes just moving around. Orbit around the starting figure, pan from side to side, and zoom in on their shoes. It feels a bit like being a movie director controlling a camera. Once these movements become second nature, you’re ready to start drawing.
Your First Shapes
All complex models in SketchUp start with simple 2D shapes. The three most fundamental drawing tools are the Line, Rectangle, and Circle tools. Let's see how they work.
The Line tool is your basic pencil. You use it to draw individual straight lines, which are called edges in SketchUp. When you connect enough edges to form a closed loop on a flat plane, SketchUp automatically creates a face inside them.
Try it out. Select the Line tool (the pencil icon), click once to start a line, move your mouse, and click again to end it. Notice how SketchUp tries to help you by snapping the line to the red, green, or blue axes. This keeps your drawing aligned. Draw four connected lines to make a square, and watch a face appear.
The Rectangle tool is a shortcut for creating four edges and a face all at once. Select the tool, click to anchor the first corner, drag your mouse to size the rectangle, and click again to finish. To be precise, you can just type the dimensions. After the first click, let go of the mouse and type something like 5',10' (for 5 feet by 10 feet) or 2m,3m (for 2 meters by 3 meters) and hit Enter.
The Circle tool works similarly. Click to set the center point, pull the mouse out to define the radius, and click again. Or, after the first click, just type the radius you want (e.g., 6" or 15cm) and press Enter.
Every tool in SketchUp follows the same pattern: Click to start, move the mouse to size, and click to finish. Or, for precision, click to start, and then type a measurement.
