What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven approach for improving business processes. Its main goal is to identify and eliminate defects or errors in any process, from manufacturing a product to providing a service. The name itself comes from a statistical concept.

This methodology was pioneered by Motorola in the 1980s as a way to compete with Japanese manufacturers who were producing higher-quality electronics. By focusing intensely on reducing process variation, Motorola was able to drastically improve the quality of its products and save billions of dollars. The idea is simple: variation in a process creates opportunities for defects. By controlling variation, you reduce defects.

Core Principles

Six Sigma is built on a few fundamental principles that guide every project. These principles ensure that efforts are focused, effective, and sustainable.

First and foremost is a relentless focus on the customer. In Six Sigma, quality is ultimately defined by what the customer values. Any improvement made to a process should directly or indirectly enhance the customer's experience and satisfaction.

The DMAIC Framework

To provide structure to its improvement projects, Six Sigma uses a five-phase framework called DMAIC.
