It lists ingredients and tells you how to combine them, but it doesn't give you a final result because some ingredient amounts might change. For example, $5x - 3$ is an algebraic expression.

Variables are the mystery boxes of algebra. You might see letters like xx, yy, or aa. These aren't just random letters; they stand in for a number. The value of a variable can change depending on the problem you're solving. If you're calculating the cost of a taxi ride, the variable might be the number of miles you travel, which changes from trip to trip.

A number that stands on its own and has a fixed value.

Unlike a variable, a constant is a number you can count on. Its value never changes. In the expression 4x+94x + 9, the number 9 is the constant. No matter what value xx takes, 9 will always be 9. It’s the fixed part of the recipe.

coefficient

A number that is multiplied by a variable.

A coefficient is always attached to a variable. It tells you how many of that variable you have. In the expression 3y53y - 5, the number 3 is the coefficient of yy. It means you have three yy's.

What if you just see a variable like xx with no number in front? It's a common convention in algebra that a variable by itself has a coefficient of 1. So, xx is the same as 1x1x.

Putting It All Together

Variables, coefficients, and constants don't just float around on their own. They are organized into chunks called terms. An expression is made up of one or more terms, separated by plus or minus signs.
