The Fastest Way Isn't the Shortest

In racing, the goal is simple: complete a lap as quickly as possible. Your first instinct might be to hug the inside of every corner, taking the shortest route. But the shortest path is rarely the fastest. The key to speed is the racing line, which is the optimal path a car can take around a circuit to minimize time.

Think of it this way: your car can only go so fast in a tight turn before the tires lose grip. By using the racing line, you make the turn's arc as wide and gentle as possible. A wider arc allows you to carry more speed through the corner and get back on the power sooner. It's all about maintaining momentum.

Anatomy of a Corner

To master the racing line, you need to understand the three key parts of any corner: the turn-in, the apex, and the exit.

Turn-in: The point where you start steering into the corner. • Apex: The innermost point of your line, where you're closest to the inside curb. • Exit: The point where the car is straight enough to accelerate fully out of the turn.

The classic approach is to drive from the outside edge of the track, clip the inside apex, and let the car drift back to the outside on exit. This “outside-inside-outside” path effectively widens the corner.

By using all the available tarmac, you are increasing the radius of the turn. A larger radius means you can maintain a higher minimum speed, which is crucial for a fast lap time.

Adapting Your Line

The ideal apex isn't always at the geometric middle of the corner. Its position changes based on what comes next. The most important part of a corner is the exit, because it determines your speed down the following straight. A fast exit is almost always the priority.

This leads to the concept of a late apex. By turning in slightly later and hitting an apex past the corner's midpoint, you can straighten the car earlier on exit. This sacrifices a tiny bit of entry speed but allows you to get on the throttle much sooner, maximizing your speed down the next straightaway.

A late apex is your best friend before a long straight. A slow entry and a fast exit will beat a fast entry and a slow exit every time.

Conversely, if a corner leads immediately into another corner in the opposite direction (a chicane), you might take an early apex. This positions the car better for the second turn, sacrificing the exit of the first corner to optimize the entry for the next.

Putting It into Practice

Theory is one thing, but execution is another. The best way to learn the racing line for a specific track is to see how the experts do it.

Start by watching onboard laps from professional sim racers or real-world drivers on YouTube. Don't just watch passively. Pay close attention to:

  • Where do they position the car on corner entry?
  • Exactly where do they hit the apex? Do they use the curbs?
  • How much of the track do they use on exit?

After studying a lap, try to replicate it yourself in the simulator. Record your own lap and play it back side-by-side with the professional's lap. This comparison is the fastest way to see where your line differs and where you're losing time.
