Introduction to ServiceNow

What Is ServiceNow?

ServiceNow is a cloud-based platform that helps organizations manage their digital workflows. Think of it as a central hub for automating and streamlining business processes, especially within the IT department. Instead of relying on emails, spreadsheets, and manual tracking, teams can use ServiceNow to manage tasks, projects, and requests in a structured way.

ServiceNow is a powerful cloud-based platform that helps organizations simplify their workflows and improve productivity.

At its core, ServiceNow is built for IT Service Management, or ITSM. ITSM is the practice of how IT teams manage the end-to-end delivery of IT services to customers. This includes everything from planning and designing new services to supporting them once they're live. ServiceNow provides a suite of tools that align with ITSM best practices, helping companies deliver more reliable and efficient IT services.

Core Building Blocks

While the ServiceNow platform is vast, a few key modules form the foundation of its ITSM capabilities. Understanding these is essential for seeing how it manages everything from system outages to employee hardware.

ModulePurposeExample
Incident ManagementTo restore normal service operation as quickly as possible.A user's laptop won't connect to the Wi-Fi. An IT technician creates an incident ticket to track the investigation and fix.
Change ManagementTo control the lifecycle of all changes with minimum disruption to IT services. The email server needs a critical security patch. A change request is submitted, reviewed, approved, and scheduled for a low-impact time.
Asset ManagementTo track and manage the lifecycle of IT assets, like hardware and software.A new employee is hired. The IT department uses asset management to find an available laptop, assign it to the user, and track it until it's returned or retired.

These three modules work together. An incident might reveal a faulty server, which requires a change to replace it. The server itself is tracked from purchase to disposal using Asset Management. This interconnected approach gives organizations a complete view of their IT environment, which is crucial for processes like issuing new devices.
