During indexing, the search engine analyzes the content of each page it has crawled. It looks at the text, images, videos, and other media, and catalogues it all in a gigantic database called an index. This index is like an enormous encyclopedia for the internet, with an entry for every word seen on every webpage. This organized database allows the search engine to retrieve information almost instantly.
Ranking the Results
The final step is ranking. When you type a search query and hit 'Enter', the search engine races through its index to find all the matching pages. But finding matches isn't enough. The real challenge is to show the best pages first.
This is where search algorithms come in. An algorithm is a set of rules a computer follows to solve a problem. Search engines use complex algorithms to sort through the billions of indexed pages and rank them in order of relevance and quality for a specific search. While the exact formulas are secret, they generally look at a few key things:
