Sensory Exploration

Your Five Amazing Senses

You have five special tools that help you explore everything around you. These tools are your senses! They are sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. Your eyes help you see colors and shapes. Your ears let you hear music and laughter. Your skin helps you feel if something is soft or bumpy. Your tongue tells you if food is sweet or sour. And your nose helps you smell flowers or cookies baking in the oven.

When we teach students about the five senses, we teach them about their bodies and how they experience the world around them.

Using your senses helps you learn about the world in a super fun, hands-on way. Let's try some activities to put your senses to work.

Time to Get Messy

One of the best ways to explore your sense of touch is with a sensory bin. It’s just a box or container filled with interesting things to feel. You don’t need special toys, just a curious mind and willing hands.

You can fill a bin with dry materials like rice, beans, sand, or pasta. Or try something wet, like water with some bubbles or even taste-safe mud (made from cocoa powder, cornstarch, and water). As you play, think about how the materials feel. Are they smooth, rough, cool, or warm? Are they heavy or light? Swish them around and listen to the sounds they make.

There are no rules for sensory play. The goal is to explore, discover, and have fun with how things feel, look, and sound!

Ears, Nose, and Tongue

Let's give your ears a workout with a sound matching game. Find a few pairs of small containers you can’t see through, like plastic eggs or yogurt cups with lids. Fill each pair with the same material. For example, put rice in two containers, jingle bells in two others, and beans in another pair.

Now, mix them up! Shake each container and listen carefully. Can you find the two that make the same sound? This game helps you focus on what you're hearing instead of what you're seeing.

You can explore taste and smell with a snack. Close your eyes and have someone give you a small piece of a familiar food, like a slice of apple or a pretzel. Before you taste it, take a sniff. What do you smell? Then, take a bite. Is it sweet, salty, or sour? Is the texture crunchy or soft? Paying close attention turns eating into a sensory adventure.
