The New Digital Format
The SAT has moved from a paper-and-pencil test to a fully digital format. You'll take the exam on a laptop or tablet at a testing center. This shift isn't just about the medium; it changes the entire experience.

How Adaptive Testing Works
The digital SAT uses a feature called multistage adaptive testing. This might sound complicated, but the idea is simple. Each of the two main sections—Reading and Writing, and Math—is split into two parts, called modules.
Everyone starts with a first module containing a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. How you perform on this first module determines the difficulty level of the questions you'll see in the second module.
If you do well on the first module, the second one will be more challenging. If you struggle a bit, the second module will be easier. This helps the test get a more precise measurement of your skill level in less time. Your final score reflects both the number of questions you answer correctly and the difficulty of the questions you were given in the second module.
Section Breakdown
The SAT is divided into two main sections. Each section has two modules, and there's a 10-minute break in between the Reading and Writing and the Math sections.

Roughly 75% of the questions are multiple-choice, while the other 25% are "student-produced responses," where you'll type your answer into a box.

Understanding Your Score
Your total SAT score will range from 400 to 1600. This score is the sum of your scores on the two main sections.
- Reading and Writing: Scored on a scale of 200 to 800.
- Math: Scored on a scale of 200 to 800.
Your score is calculated based on the number of questions you answer correctly. There is no penalty for incorrect answers, so it's always in your best interest to give an answer for every question.
