Salsa Basics

Finding the Salsa Rhythm

Salsa music is built on a foundation of eight beats, organized into two bars of four. Dancers typically move on six of these eight beats. The basic pattern is stepping on counts 1, 2, and 3, followed by a pause on 4. Then, you step again on 5, 6, and 7, and pause on 8. This creates the signature "quick, quick, slow" rhythm. The pauses on 4 and 8 are just as important as the steps. They give the dance its unique pulse and give you a moment to prepare for the next movement.

Listen to some salsa music and try clapping it out: clap-clap-clap, pause, clap-clap-clap, pause. Once you feel that beat, you're ready to add your feet.

The Forward and Back Basic

This is the most fundamental step in salsa. It moves you forward and backward in a straight line. We'll break it down by the numbers.

For the first half of the music (counts 1-4):

  1. Step forward with your left foot.
  2. Shift your weight onto your right foot, keeping it in place.
  3. Bring your left foot back to its starting position, right next to your right foot.
  4. Pause. Keep your weight on your left foot.

For the second half (counts 5-8): 5. Step backward with your right foot. 6. Shift your weight onto your left foot, which has stayed in place. 7. Bring your right foot back to its starting position. 8. Pause. Keep your weight on your right foot.

Notice how your weight shifts. Your feet return to the center on counts 3 and 7, ready for the next move. This weight transfer is the key to smooth salsa dancing.

The Side Basic

Once you're comfortable moving forward and back, you can try the side basic. The rhythm and weight shifts are the same, but the direction changes. Instead of moving along a line, you'll step from side to side.

Here’s how it works for counts 1 through 4:

  1. Step to your left with your left foot.
  2. Shift your weight to your right foot, without moving it.
  3. Bring your left foot back to the center.
  4. Pause, with your weight on your left foot.

And for counts 5 through 8: 5. Step to your right with your right foot. 6. Shift your weight to your left foot. 7. Bring your right foot back to the center. 8. Pause, with your weight on your right foot.

This step is great for changing your position on the dance floor. Try alternating between the forward-and-back basic and the side basic to get a feel for how they flow together.

Mastering basics is critical to progressing safely.
