Wireless Basics

Wi-Fi is a way to send information over the air using radio waves. It’s similar to how a car radio picks up a station, but instead of music, your devices receive and send digital data for websites, videos, and messages.

A wireless router is the central hub of this operation. It takes the wired internet connection from your modem and converts it into radio waves. Your phone, laptop, or smart TV then picks up these waves, allowing you to get online without being plugged in. This process works both ways; your devices also send radio waves back to the router to upload information.

Frequency Bands

Wi-Fi operates on specific radio frequencies, much like different radio stations have their own channels. The two most common Wi-Fi frequencies, or bands, are 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) and 5 GHz. Most modern routers can broadcast on both bands simultaneously, and you might see them as separate networks when you connect a new device.

Think of the 2.4 GHz band as a long, winding country road. It has a longer range and is better at navigating around obstacles, but it has a lower speed limit and can get congested. Many other household devices, like microwaves and older cordless phones, also use this frequency, which can cause interference.

The 5 GHz band is like a multi-lane highway. It offers much faster speeds and is less crowded, but it has a shorter range and is more easily blocked by walls and other objects. It's best for devices that are closer to the router and need a fast connection, such as for streaming high-definition video or online gaming.

Signal Obstructions

Wi-Fi signals are just radio waves, and they can be absorbed or reflected by physical objects in your home or office. This is why your internet might be fast in the living room but slow in the bedroom.

The materials in your walls make a big difference. Drywall and wood don't block the signal very much, but denser materials are a bigger problem. Brick, stone, and especially concrete can significantly weaken Wi-Fi waves. Metal is the worst offender, as it reflects radio waves. This includes metal studs in walls, large appliances like refrigerators, and even wire mesh in plaster.

Even water can interfere with your signal. An aquarium or even the pipes in your walls can disrupt the waves as they pass through. To get the best coverage, it's ideal to place your router in a central, open location, away from thick walls and large metal objects.

Network Security and Updates

Connecting to the internet without security is like leaving your front door wide open. Anyone nearby could potentially access your network, use your internet, and even see the information you're sending and receiving. To prevent this, Wi-Fi networks use security protocols to encrypt the data, scrambling it so only authorized users can understand it.

Over the years, these protocols have evolved to become more secure. You may see options like WEP, WPA, WPA2, and WPA3 in your router settings. WEP is an old, outdated standard that is very easy to crack and should never be used. WPA was an improvement, but it has also been superseded.

Today, WPA2 is the minimum standard you should use. WPA3 is the latest and most secure option, offering even stronger protection. When setting up your network, always choose WPA2 or, if your devices support it, WPA3.

Finally, it's important to keep your router's software, called firmware, up to date. Manufacturers release firmware updates to patch security vulnerabilities, fix bugs, and sometimes even improve performance. Most modern routers can update automatically, but it’s a good idea to log into your router's settings occasionally and check for updates manually.
