Cube Notation
The Language of the Cube
To solve a Rubik's Cube, you need a set of instructions. But how do you write down a move? Or a sequence of moves? Trying to describe it with words like "turn the front side to the left" gets confusing fast. Is it my left or the cube's left?
To solve this, the cubing community created a universal language called cube notation. It's a simple way to write down any turn or sequence of turns. Learning this notation is the first step to mastering any solution method. It turns complex rotations into a simple, readable script.
Cube notation is what cubers use to describe algorithms, and algorithms are the memorized sequences of moves that they use to solve the cube quickly.
Meet the Faces
A cube has six faces, and each one is represented by a single letter. To keep things consistent, you first need to orient the cube. Hold it so one side is facing you. That side is now your Front face for as long as you keep the cube in that position. The other faces are named relative to the front.
The six faces are:
- F (Front): The face looking at you.
- B (Back): The face opposite the front.
- U (Up): The top face.
- D (Down): The bottom face.
- R (Right): The right-hand face.
- L (Left): The left-hand face.
Remember, these labels depend on how you're holding the cube. If you rotate the entire cube in your hands to look at a new face, that new face becomes your Front, and all the other labels shift accordingly.
Making a Move
Now that we know the faces, we can describe how to turn them. There are three basic types of turns for each face.
Clockwise Turns A letter by itself means you turn that face 90 degrees clockwise. Imagine you are looking directly at that face to determine which way is clockwise.
So, R means a clockwise turn of the Right face, and U means a clockwise turn of the Up face.
Counter-Clockwise Turns A letter followed by an apostrophe ('), often called a "prime," means you turn that face 90 degrees counter-clockwise.
An L' (L prime) is a counter-clockwise turn of the Left face. A D' (D prime) is a counter-clockwise turn of the Down face.
180-Degree Turns A letter followed by a 2 means you turn that face 180 degrees. This is the same as two clockwise or two counter-clockwise turns, so the direction doesn't matter.
For example, B2 means turning the Back face twice. Sequences of moves are written just by listing them in order. For instance, R U R' means turn the right face clockwise, then the up face clockwise, then the right face counter-clockwise.
| Notation | Move |
|---|---|
F | Turn the Front face 90° clockwise |
F' | Turn the Front face 90° counter-clockwise |
F2 | Turn the Front face 180° |
U | Turn the Up face 90° clockwise |
U' | Turn the Up face 90° counter-clockwise |
U2 | Turn the Up face 180° |
R | Turn the Right face 90° clockwise |
R' | Turn the Right face 90° counter-clockwise |
R2 | Turn the Right face 180° |
This same pattern applies to all six faces: F, B, U, D, L, R. With this notation, you can now read, write, and share any sequence of moves for the Rubik's Cube.
What is the primary purpose of Rubik's Cube notation?
If you are holding a Rubik's Cube, which face is designated as 'F' (Front)?
