Roblox Studio Basics
Welcome to Roblox Studio
Roblox Studio is your workshop for creating anything you can imagine on the Roblox platform. It’s a 3D environment where you can build worlds, script interactions, and design entire games from scratch. Think of it as a digital box of building blocks with unlimited potential.
Using Roblox Studio, players can design their own games, build immersive worlds, and even integrate artificial intelligence to create smarter, more interactive experiences.
Before you can build complex experiences, you need to know your way around the tool. Let's start with a tour of the main interface.
Finding Your Way Around
When you first open a new project, you'll see several key panels. The large central window is the 3D Workspace, also called the Viewport. This is where you'll see your game world and build everything in it. You can move the camera around by holding the right mouse button and using the W, A, S, and D keys, just like in many games.
On the right side, you'll find two critical panels: the Explorer and Properties. The Explorer shows a list of every single object in your game, organized in a hierarchy. This includes parts, scripts, lighting, and players. Below it, the Properties panel displays all the settings for whatever object you have selected in the Explorer or the 3D Workspace.
The Toolbox, usually found on the left, is a library of pre-made models, images, and other assets that you can drag and drop directly into your game. It's a great resource for getting started quickly.
Building with Parts
Everything you build in Roblox is made of basic objects called Parts. A Part is the fundamental building block, like a single LEGO brick. You can create different shapes like blocks, spheres, wedges, and cylinders.
To add a new Part, go to the Home or Model tab at the top of the screen. You'll see an icon labeled 'Part'. Clicking it will spawn a new rectangular block at the center of your camera's view.
Once a Part is in your world, you can manipulate it using three main tools: Move, Scale, and Rotate. You can find these in the Home or Model tab.

After selecting a Part, click one of these tools. You'll see colorful handles appear on the Part, allowing you to make adjustments. Try creating a few parts and practice moving, scaling, and rotating them to get a feel for how they work.
Changing Properties
Every Part has properties you can change. Select a Part, and look at the Properties panel. Here, you can customize almost everything about it. You can change its color, what material it's made of (like plastic, wood, or metal), and how transparent it is.
Two important properties to know are Anchored and CanCollide.
- Anchored: This is a checkbox. If checked, the Part will be frozen in the air and won't be affected by gravity. This is essential for building things that shouldn't fall over, like walls and platforms.
- CanCollide: This determines if other objects can pass through the Part. If checked, it's solid. If unchecked, players and other parts can go right through it.
Experiment! Change a Part's
Colorto bright red. Set itsMaterialto 'Neon'. Then, uncheckAnchoredand click the 'Play' button to see what happens. Learning comes from trying things out.
Saving Your Project
It's a good habit to save your work often. To save your project, go to File in the top-left corner.
- Save to Roblox: This saves your project to the Roblox cloud, making it accessible from any computer. You can choose to publish it so other players can play it.
- Save to File: This saves a local copy of your project to your computer with an
.rbxlfile extension.
For now, saving to a file is a great way to keep backups of your creations. When you're ready to share your game with the world, you'll use 'Publish to Roblox'.
