Dual Level Architecture

Two Tiers of Classification

Before 2006, the International Patent Classification (IPC) was a one-size-fits-all system. This created a challenge: the system needed to be detailed enough for specialist patent examiners at large offices, but also simple enough for smaller offices and the general public. To solve this, the IPC was reformed into a dual-level architecture: a stable Core level and a dynamic Advanced level. This split allows the system to serve different users' needs without compromise.

The Core Level: Stability and Simplicity

The Core level is the foundation of the modern IPC. It contains about 20,000 entries, which include all the main groups and the most important subgroups. Think of it as the 'essentials' version of the classification system.

Its primary audience is smaller and public users who need a manageable and consistent tool for searching. To ensure this consistency, the Core level is updated on a fixed schedule, with a new version released every three years. This deliberate pace prioritizes stability, making it easier for offices with limited resources to keep up and for general searches to remain effective over time.

The Advanced Level: Detailed and Dynamic

The Advanced level is the complete, unabridged IPC, containing all 70,000-plus classification entries. It encompasses the entire Core level and adds thousands of more specific subgroups. This is the expert-level tool, designed for large patent offices and professionals conducting deep where precision is paramount.

Unlike the Core level's three-year cycle, the Advanced level is updated continuously. As new technologies emerge and existing fields become more complex, new subgroups can be created and implemented right away. This ensures that the classification system keeps pace with the rapid speed of innovation, allowing examiners to categorize and find highly specific inventions, like a particular algorithm in machine learning or a new method for gene editing.

Every patent document is classified at the most detailed level available in the Advanced IPC. This means that a document classified under a very specific Advanced level symbol is automatically included in the broader Core level group that contains it. For example, a patent might be placed in an Advanced level group for 'rechargeable lithium-ion batteries using a silicon anode.' This group is itself a subdivision of a Core level group for 'rechargeable batteries.' So, the document has a home in both levels simultaneously.

This structure directly impacts how you search. Using a Core level classification for your search will cast a wide net, retrieving all documents within that broad technological area. This is useful for getting a general overview. However, if you're trying to determine if a very specific invention already exists, you'll need to use the deeper Advanced level classifications to narrow your results and avoid wading through thousands of irrelevant patents. When searching databases from different jurisdictions, it's important to know whether the provided classifications are at the Core or Advanced level to interpret the results correctly.
