The first step on your journey to driving solo is getting your learner licence. This permit allows you to learn to drive on the road, but with some important conditions. Before you can get behind the wheel, you need to meet a few key requirements.
Are You Eligible?
To apply for a learner licence in Queensland, you must be at least 16 years old. You also need to be medically fit to drive. This means your health won't negatively affect your ability to drive safely. For most people, this just means you can see well enough, with or without glasses or contact lenses.

The Application Process

Rules for Learner Drivers
Holding a learner licence comes with significant responsibilities. You are not just learning for yourself, but also learning to be a safe member of the traffic community. The most important rule is that you must always drive with a supervisor.
Your supervisor must:
- Hold a valid open licence for the class of vehicle you are driving and have held it for at least one year.
- Sit in the front passenger seat, next to you.
- Have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) below 0.05.
In addition to having a supervisor, there are several other critical restrictions you must follow at all times.
