Every new project should begin with an identical, empty folder structure. This isn't just about creating a 'Footage' folder; it's a comprehensive system. Consistency is key. When an assistant editor, a colorist, or a sound designer receives your project drive, they should immediately understand where everything is. This 'silo' approach prevents confusion and saves countless hours.

Taming High-Resolution Footage

By transcoding your massive OCF into a lightweight, edit-friendly format, you allow your computer to work with smaller, less-compressed files. This results in smooth, real-time playback. The crucial part is that these proxies share the exact same metadata—timecode, file name, duration—as the originals. You edit with the fast, lightweight proxies, and when it's time to export the final master, the editing software automatically relinks to the high-quality OCF for rendering.

Automating Your Workflow

Creating proxies manually for hundreds of clips is inefficient. Professional Non-Linear Editors (NLEs) like DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Final Cut Pro can automate this process during ingest. You can configure your project to automatically create proxies as soon as you import your media. You set up your desired proxy format—like —and resolution once, and the software handles the transcoding in the background.

Once your proxies are generated and attached, your NLE will have a simple toggle button. With one click, you can switch your timeline viewer between the smooth-playing proxy files and the full-resolution original files. This allows you to check critical focus or detail on the OCF, then immediately switch back to the proxies to continue editing without interruption.

By building your projects on a foundation of strict organization and leveraging proxy workflows, you move beyond simple assembly. You create a robust, scalable system that can handle projects of any size and complexity.
