Revive or Restore

Your device is in DFU mode and connected to Apple Configurator. Now you face a choice with significant consequences: Revive or Restore. While both actions flash the device's firmware, they operate on fundamentally different principles. One is a surgical repair, and the other is a complete overhaul.

Think of it like this: Revive is like updating the foundation and electrical system of a house while the residents and their belongings stay inside. Restore is like bulldozing the house and building a new one from the same blueprint. The choice depends entirely on the problem you're trying to solve.

The Technical Divide

The 'Revive' process is designed for a specific scenario: the core operating system is failing to boot, but the underlying data partition is likely intact. Reviving a device updates the firmware and the recoveryOS without modifying the user's data volume. It's a non-destructive operation aimed at fixing software issues that prevent a successful startup, such as a boot loop.

Crucially, a Revive also updates the firmware for the (SEP). The SEP is a dedicated hardware-based security coprocessor that handles sensitive data like Face ID, Touch ID, and Apple Pay credentials. Its firmware, called sepOS, must be compatible with the main iOS version. A mismatch between iOS and sepOS can prevent the device from booting, a problem that Revive is perfectly suited to fix while preserving user data.

The goal of Revive is to get the device booting again by refreshing low-level components, leaving personal files and settings untouched.

A 'Restore', on the other hand, is the ultimate reset. It performs a low-level format of the device's NAND storage, completely erasing all data partitions, including the user volume. After the wipe, it installs a fresh copy of the latest firmware, sepOS, and the main operating system. There is no going back from a Restore; any data not backed up is gone forever.

This drastic measure is necessary for more severe problems, such as a corrupted file system, persistent software glitches that survive reboots, or when preparing a device for a new user. It ensures that no remnants of the old system or user data remain.

Making the Call

Choosing between Revive and Restore is a diagnostic decision. Your goal is always to use the least invasive method possible. Start with Revive; if it fails or doesn't resolve the issue, then escalate to a Restore as a last resort. This approach maximizes the chance of data preservation.

A good professional workflow involves attempting a Revive first. If Configurator reports an error, the specific error code can often point to a hardware issue (like failing NAND storage), confirming that a Restore would also fail and that the device needs physical repair.

Before you begin, make sure your data is backed up. A Revive is designed to be safe, but no process is 100% risk-free. A Restore is intentionally destructive. In both cases, a recent backup is your best safety net.
