Beyond the Still Image

Generating a compelling video requires a different mindset than creating a static image. You're no longer just a painter describing a scene; you are a director, cinematographer, and lighting designer all at once. Your prompt becomes the script, the shot list, and the technical guide for a virtual crew. The key is to stop describing nouns and start directing verbs.

Instead of prompting for 'a car on a street,' you prompt for 'a car speeding down a wet street, camera tracking smoothly from the side.'

This shift requires mastering a new vocabulary. Generative video models have been trained on countless hours of film, television, and stock footage. They understand the language of cinema. Using precise cinematic terms gives you granular control over the final output, transforming a wobbly, incoherent clip into a deliberate, cinematic shot.

Directing the Virtual Camera

Your first task is to control the camera. Simple prompts produce static, tripod-like shots. To create dynamic movement, you need to use terms that describe specific camera motions. Think about how a real camera would move to capture the scene you envision.

Without it, a person's face might morph subtly, or an object might flicker in and out of existence. Your choice of words, or tokens, directly impacts this stability.

Beyond consistency, you need to control the amount and style of motion. Most generative video platforms, like Runway and Pika, offer parameters to control motion weight or intensity. Use strong, evocative verbs. 'A character walking' is generic. 'A character trudging through deep snow' implies slow, heavy movement and gives the model much more to work with.

Words like 'slow-motion,' 'time-lapse,' 'drifting,' 'vibrating,' and 'accelerating' are powerful motion tokens. They act as global modifiers, influencing the entire clip's temporal behaviour. For instance, 'a flower blooming in time-lapse' sets a clear expectation for the speed and nature of the transformation.

Refining with Negative Prompts
