When you work with heavy outerwear fabrics like wool coating, melton, or tweed, the rules change. Pins can cause distortion in thick fabrics. Instead, use pattern weights to hold your pattern pieces firmly in place. Ensure your fabric is laid out completely flat on the cutting surface, with no overhanging sections pulling it down. Work slowly, and consider using a rotary cutter instead of shears for a cleaner, more accurate cut without lifting the fabric from the table.
