Getting a driver's license in Uzbekistan has changed. The process is now more flexible for some, with new vehicle categories and modern, automated testing centers. Let's walk through what you need to know.

A new vehicle category, A1, has been introduced for smaller two-wheeled vehicles. This license is specifically for mopeds and scooters. If you're at least 16 years old, you can now get a license to ride one legally.

This separates them from the more powerful motorcycles in category A, which require a different license and a higher minimum age. It's a great option for city commuting and shorter trips.

One of the biggest updates is how you can prepare for the theory exam for categories A (motorcycles) and B (cars). In the past, everyone had to attend a driving school for all parts of the training. Now, you have the option to study the theoretical part on your own.

This allows you to learn the rules of the road at your own pace, using books, online resources, or apps. However, this flexibility only applies to the theory. For the practical driving test, you still must complete training and instruction at a certified driving school. For all other categories, like trucks (C) and buses (D), attending a driving school for both theory and practical lessons remains mandatory.

To make the examination process fairer and more transparent, Uzbekistan has rolled out automated testing centers. The goal is to remove human bias and the possibility of corruption from the licensing process. The entire exam, from the moment you enter the center, is recorded.

The theory test is taken on a computer, which grades your answers instantly. For the practical exam, you'll drive a car equipped with special sensors. These sensors track your movements, speed, and whether you follow traffic rules correctly, calculating your score automatically without an examiner's subjective input.

These changes aim to modernize the licensing system, making it more convenient for applicants and more reliable for everyone on the road.
