What Makes a Polygon?
A polygon is a flat, two-dimensional shape made entirely of straight lines that connect to form a closed figure. Think of the shapes you drew as a kid: triangles, squares, and stars. They're all polygons.
For a shape to be a polygon, it must follow three simple rules:
- It must be flat. Polygons live on a 2D surface, like a piece of paper.
- It must be made of straight sides. No curves allowed!
- It must be closed. The sides must all connect, with no gaps.
A circle, for example, is not a polygon because its edge is curved. An open-ended shape, like the letter C, isn't a polygon either because its lines don't fully connect.
Naming by Numbers
Polygons are named based on how many sides they have. The names come from Greek prefixes for numbers. A three-sided polygon is a triangle, and a four-sided one is a quadrilateral.

Regular vs. Irregular
Polygons can be sorted into two main families: regular and irregular.
Regular Polygon

Regular polygons are perfectly symmetrical. A square is a regular quadrilateral, and an equilateral triangle is a regular triangle. They look balanced and uniform.
Irregular Polygon

A polygon where the sides are not all the same length or the interior angles are not all the same size.
Most polygons you see in daily life are irregular. A kite, a rectangle, or a randomly drawn five-sided shape are all irregular polygons. They have straight sides and are closed, but they lack the perfect symmetry of their regular cousins.
