Introduction to Pokémon Go
Welcome to the World of Pokémon
Pokémon Go blends the real world with the digital world of Pokémon. The game uses your phone's GPS to turn your neighborhood, parks, and city streets into a place where you can find and collect creatures called Pokémon. The primary goal is to "catch 'em all" and complete your Pokédex, which is an encyclopedia of all the Pokémon you've discovered.
As you explore, you'll also work towards becoming a powerful Pokémon Trainer. This involves leveling up, collecting items, and eventually participating in battles. But first, let's get familiar with the game's interface and how to navigate this new world.
Your View of the World
When you open the game, you'll see a map that reflects your actual surroundings. Your character, or Trainer avatar, stands in the middle of the screen. As you walk around in the real world, your avatar moves along the map with you.
The interface is designed to be simple. Your Trainer Profile in the bottom-left corner shows your progress. The Main Menu, represented by a Poké Ball icon, opens up options for viewing your Pokémon and items. The bar in the bottom-right shows silhouettes of Pokémon that are currently nearby.
Points of Interest
As you explore the map, you'll notice two key types of landmarks: PokéStops and Gyms. These are based on real-world locations of interest, like statues, murals, and historical markers.
PokéStops appear on the map as blue cubes. When you get close enough, the cube will transform into a spinning disc. Tapping on it and spinning the photo disc will reward you with essential items like Poké Balls and potions.
Gyms are much larger structures on the map, often appearing as towers. They are controlled by one of three teams: Mystic (blue), Valor (red), or Instinct (yellow). While we'll cover battling later, for now, just know that these are important locations you'll interact with frequently.
Growing as a Trainer
Nearly every action you take in Pokémon Go earns you Experience Points, or XP. This includes catching Pokémon, spinning PokéStops, and evolving your Pokémon. Gaining enough XP will increase your Trainer level.
Higher Trainer levels unlock new items, allow you to encounter more powerful Pokémon in the wild, and increase the maximum power of your own Pokémon.
Your current level and progress to the next one are always visible on your Trainer Profile screen. Leveling up is a key part of your journey, so make sure to perform actions that grant XP whenever you can.
