Your Home's Circulatory System

Think of your home's plumbing like a circulatory system. It brings in fresh, clean water and carries away wastewater, all working quietly behind your walls and under your floors. It might seem complex, but every residential system is built on a few core ideas.

Every home plumbing system consists of three main components: supply lines, waste lines, and vent systems.

Let's break down these three parts. One brings water in, and the other two work together to take it out.

Fresh Water In

The water supply system brings clean water into your house under pressure. Whether it comes from a city main or a private well, this water is ready to use. It enters your home through a main pipe and passes through a meter that measures your usage. The very first valve on this line is the main shut-off, which can stop all water flow to the house—a crucial thing to locate in an emergency.

After the main shut-off, the line splits. One pipe carries cold water directly to faucets, toilets, and appliances. The other pipe goes to your water heater. From there, a hot water line runs parallel to the cold water line, supplying heated water to the same fixtures and appliances.

This whole system relies on pressure. The municipal supplier uses pumps to push water through the mains, so it's forceful enough to travel through your home's pipes, up to a second-floor shower, and out the showerhead. If you have a well, you have a pump and a pressure tank to do the same job.

Wastewater Out

Once you've used the water, it needs to go somewhere. This is the job of the drain-waste-vent (DWV) system. Unlike the supply system, which uses pressure, the DWV system is simpler: it uses gravity.

All the drain pipes in your home are angled slightly downward. This slope ensures that wastewater from sinks, showers, and toilets flows naturally toward the main sewer line or a septic tank. It's a quiet, effective process that requires no mechanical parts.

Every fixture has a trap, which is a U-shaped bend in the pipe you can see under any sink. This simple but clever device holds a small amount of water that creates a seal, preventing unpleasant sewer gases from rising up through the drain and into your home.

The final part of the DWV system is the vents. These pipes, usually running up through the roof, don't carry water. Instead, they let air into the drainpipes. This is critical. Without air to displace it, water would gurgle and flow slowly, like liquid from a can with only one hole punched in it. Vents allow water to drain smoothly and help carry sewer gases safely out of the house.

Pipes and Fittings

Plumbing systems have been built with many materials over the years, from clay to cast iron. Today, you'll most likely find three types of pipes in a modern home. Each has a specific purpose.
