Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated plastic ball over a net.

The court is the same size as a doubles badminton court, which is smaller than a tennis court. The net is also lower. This smaller scale makes the game less physically demanding than tennis, but it still offers a great workout.

The basic objective is straightforward: hit the ball over the net in a way that your opponent cannot legally return it. While it's easy to pick up, the game has plenty of room for skill and strategy.

The game has humble beginnings. It was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle, Washington. Three fathers—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum—came home one summer day to find their families bored.

Their property had an old badminton court, but they couldn't find a full set of rackets. They improvised, grabbing some table tennis paddles and a perforated plastic ball. They lowered the badminton net, and the first game of pickleball was played. Over the next few days, they created a set of rules, keeping in mind the goal of creating a game the whole family could play together.

For decades, pickleball was a well-kept secret in the Pacific Northwest. But in recent years, its popularity has skyrocketed across the globe.

Why the sudden boom? The game is incredibly accessible. The learning curve is gentle, so new players can enjoy rallies almost immediately. The smaller court means less running, making it popular with people of all ages and fitness levels. It's also a very social sport, often played in a friendly, communal atmosphere.

This blend of simplicity, social interaction, and healthy competition has turned a backyard game into a worldwide phenomenon.
