Pickleball Basics and Play
Introduction to Pickleball
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport that blends elements from a few other games you might know: tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Two or four players use solid paddles to hit a perforated polymer ball over a net. The court is smaller than a tennis court, and the pace of the game is often quick and lively.
The main goal is simple: hit the ball over the net so your opponent can't return it legally. It's played on a court with specific lines, including a seven-foot non-volley zone on each side of the net, nicknamed "the kitchen." You score points only when your team is serving, and games are typically played to 11 points.
A Backyard Invention
The story of pickleball begins in the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. After a game of golf, Joel Pritchard, a congressman, and his friend Bill Bell returned home to find their families bored. They wanted to play badminton but couldn't find a full set of rackets.
They improvised. They grabbed some table tennis paddles, a perforated plastic ball, and lowered the badminton net. They started making up rules as they went, creating a game that was fun and accessible for the whole family. Another friend, Barney McCallum, joined in, and together the three men created the game we now know as pickleball.
And the name? According to one popular story, it came from the Pritchards' family dog, Pickles, who would chase the ball and run off with it.
An Explosion in Popularity
For decades, pickleball was a niche sport, popular in certain communities but largely unknown to the wider public. That has changed dramatically in recent years.
Pickleball, invented in Washington State in 1965, has grown explosively in the United States, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Why the sudden boom? A few key factors are at play. First, it's incredibly easy to learn. Unlike tennis, which can take a long time to master, beginners can pick up the basics of pickleball in an afternoon. The smaller court means less ground to cover, making it less physically demanding and more accessible for a wide range of ages and fitness levels.
The social aspect is another huge draw. The courts are close together, and the game's friendly nature encourages conversation and camaraderie. It’s a great way to meet new people and stay active at the same time.
