What Plants Eat
Unlike animals, plants don't need to find food. They make their own. This amazing process is called photosynthesis, and it's the foundation for nearly all life on Earth. It happens not just in the plants we see on land, but also in algae in the oceans and even in some types of bacteria.
The word photosynthesis comes from Greek roots: photo, meaning "light," and synthesis, meaning "putting together." Plants literally use light to put together their food.
This single process is responsible for two things vital to our survival. It creates the energy that fuels most ecosystems, and it produces the oxygen we breathe. Without it, our planet would be a very different place.
The Recipe for Sunlight
To make its food, a plant needs three key ingredients: carbon dioxide from the air, water from the soil, and energy from sunlight. The plant takes in carbon dioxide through tiny pores in its leaves and absorbs water through its roots. Sunlight provides the energy to power the chemical reaction.
This simple formula describes a profound transformation. Plants take two simple inorganic molecules, carbon dioxide and water, and use the sun's energy to create an energy-rich sugar molecule. This sugar, glucose, is the plant's food. It uses this energy to grow, repair itself, and carry out all its life functions.
The Foundation of Life
The products of photosynthesis don't just benefit the plant. They sustain almost every ecosystem on the planet. The glucose a plant produces becomes the energy source for any animal that eats it. When a herbivore eats a plant, it gets energy that originally came from the sun, captured through photosynthesis. When a carnivore eats that herbivore, the energy is transferred again. This makes photosynthetic organisms the producers at the base of nearly every food chain.
The other product, oxygen, is just as critical. The oxygen released by plants, algae, and bacteria has accumulated over billions of years to create the atmosphere we have today. Nearly every creature, from insects to humans, needs this oxygen for respiration, the process of unlocking energy from food. In a way, the breath you just took was made possible by a plant.
