Plants don't eat food the way animals do. Instead, they create their own. This amazing process is called photosynthesis, and it's how plants transform sunlight into energy. It happens in almost all plants, algae, and even some types of bacteria.

Think of it like a recipe. The ingredients are simple things found all around us: carbon dioxide from the air, water usually from the soil, and energy from sunlight. The plant takes in carbon dioxide through tiny pores in its leaves and absorbs water through its roots.
The Chemical Recipe
The recipe for photosynthesis can be written as a chemical equation. It's a precise way to show what goes in and what comes out. It looks like this:

Why Photosynthesis Matters
Photosynthesis is more than just a way for plants to eat. It's the foundation of nearly all life on Earth. The energy captured by plants becomes the energy source for almost every ecosystem. When an herbivore eats a plant, it's consuming the energy the plant stored as glucose. When a carnivore eats that herbivore, the energy is transferred again.
Without photosynthesis, most food chains would collapse.
Just as important, photosynthesis produces the oxygen we breathe. Every breath you take is possible because of the constant work of plants and algae around the world. They also play a crucial role in balancing our atmosphere by absorbing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas.
