Start with the Right Paper

The journey to a perfect paper airplane begins before you make a single fold. It starts with the paper itself. While you can make a plane out of almost anything, from a sticky note to a magazine page, the best results come from standard printer paper. This everyday paper, typically A4 or 8.5x11 inches, has the ideal balance of weight and stiffness.

Heavier paper like cardstock is tough to fold accurately and adds too much weight. A heavy plane needs more force to fly and will quickly nosedive. On the other hand, very light paper, such as newspaper, is too flimsy. It can’t hold a sharp crease, causing the plane’s wings to buckle and lose their shape in mid-air.

So, grab a crisp, clean sheet of regular copy paper. It's the gold standard for a reason. It’s strong enough to maintain its structure but light enough to glide.

The Art of the Fold

Once you have your paper, the next step is folding. The quality of your folds is the single most important factor in how well your airplane will perform.

Sharp creases are the key to any paper airplane.

A sharp crease, pressed down firmly with a thumbnail or a ruler, creates a strong, rigid edge. These crisp lines form the skeleton of your aircraft, helping it hold its shape as it cuts through the air. Weak, soft folds lead to a floppy plane that will tumble instead of soar.

Symmetry is just as crucial. Your plane must be a mirror image of itself on both sides. If one wing is even slightly larger, longer, or bent at a different angle than the other, the plane will be unbalanced. An unbalanced plane will consistently bank or spiral to one side, cutting its flight short.

Take your time. Align every edge and corner perfectly before you press down to make a crease. A symmetrical plane is a plane that flies true.

How Folds Shape Flight

Every fold you make serves a purpose. Folds at the nose of the plane, for example, often add weight to the front. This is important for balance. A plane that’s too light in the nose will stall and flutter down, while a nose-heavy plane will dive straight for the ground.

The folds that form the wings are equally important. They determine the wing's size, shape, and angle. A slight upward angle to the wings, known as dihedral, helps keep the plane stable and level during flight. If the wings angle downward, the plane is more likely to roll and become unstable.

Even small adjustments to the back edges of the wings can act like rudders, allowing you to steer your plane. Bending one edge up and the other down can make it roll, while bending both up or down can make it climb or dive. Experiment with these small changes to see how they affect your plane's path.
