Food goes in one end, and along the way, it’s broken down, its nutrients are absorbed, and waste is prepared for removal. This entire journey is carefully managed to extract everything your body needs to function.

The Major Processing Hubs

After you swallow, food travels down the esophagus to the stomach. The stomach is much more than just a holding bag; it's a powerful mixer. Its muscular walls churn and mash food, while strong acids and enzymes get to work breaking down proteins. This process turns your meal into a thick, soupy mixture.

From the stomach, chyme enters the small intestine. This is where the real magic of absorption happens. The small intestine is incredibly long—about 6 metres in an adult—and its inner surface is covered in tiny, finger-like projections called villi, which themselves are covered in even tinier microvilli. This massive surface area is crucial for soaking up nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into your bloodstream.

Whatever remains then moves into the large intestine, also known as the colon. Its main job is to absorb water and electrolytes from the indigestible food matter. It then compacts the rest into stool, getting it ready for elimination.

These microbes are not just passengers. They play a vital role in your health. They help break down fibre that your body can't digest on its own, produce essential vitamins like vitamin K and some B vitamins, and help regulate your immune system. A healthy, diverse microbiome is a cornerstone of good digestive health.
