Welcome to Nuke
Nuke is a powerful tool for visual effects, but it works differently than layer-based software like Photoshop. It's a node-based compositor. This means you build your visual effects by connecting small, single-task blocks called nodes. Each node does one specific job, like blur an image, change its color, or combine it with another image.
Think of it like a recipe. Each node is an ingredient or a step in the cooking process. You connect them in order to create the final dish, or in this case, your final shot.
The Nuke Interface
When you first open Nuke, the interface can look intimidating. It's broken down into several panels, called panes. You can customize this layout, but the default setup contains four main areas.
Here are the key players:
- Node Graph: This is the heart of Nuke. It's where you'll build and organize your network of nodes. It's the visual flowchart of your composite.
- Viewer: This is your screen. It shows you the output of whichever node you're currently looking at. You'll see your image change here as you make adjustments.
- Properties Panel: When you select a node, its specific controls and settings appear here. This is where you'll tweak parameters, like the amount of a blur or the brightness of a color correction.
- Curve Editor / Dope Sheet: These panels are for animation. The Dope Sheet shows keyframes over time, while the Curve Editor lets you fine-tune the animation curves between those keyframes.
Working with Nodes
Everything in Nuke starts in the Node Graph. To create a node, you can press the Tab key and start typing its name. For example, typing "blur" and hitting Enter will create a Blur node.
To see what a node is doing, you select it and press the '1' key on your keyboard. This connects the node to the Viewer. You can connect up to ten nodes to the Viewer using the number keys, which is useful for quickly comparing different stages of your work.
The first node in almost any script is a Read node. This is how you import media. When you create a Read node, a file browser opens, allowing you to select your footage, image sequence, or still image. Once loaded, this node represents your source media. The data flows from this node 'downstream' through the connections you make.
Project Settings
Before you start compositing, it's crucial to set up your project correctly. You can access the Project Settings by pressing 'S' in the Node Graph. Here, you define the master settings for your entire script.
This includes the output resolution (like 1920x1080 for HD), the frame rate (like 24 fps for film), and the frame range (the start and end frame of your shot).
Setting these first ensures that all new nodes default to the correct format and that your final output matches the required specifications. While individual nodes can override these settings, the Project Settings provide the baseline for your entire composite.
