What Makes an NFT Unique?
Imagine you have a ten-dollar bill. If you trade it for another ten-dollar bill, you still have ten dollars. The bills are interchangeable, or fungible. Now, imagine you have the Mona Lisa. There's only one. You can't swap it for another Mona Lisa. It's unique, or non-fungible.
A Non-Fungible Token (NFT) is a digital certificate of ownership for a unique item, whether that item is digital or physical.
Think of an NFT as a digital deed. It's a one-of-a-kind token that lives on a public database called a blockchain. This token can represent ownership of anything: a piece of digital art, a song, a ticket to an event, or even a real-world object like a house. Because it's unique, it can't be replaced with something else, solving a long-standing problem in the digital world: how to prove you own something that can be easily copied.
Non-fungible tokens, known as NFTs, are electronic identifiers confirming a digital collectible is real by recording the details on a digital ledger or database known as a blockchain.
NFTs vs. Cryptocurrencies
Both NFTs and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin use the same underlying blockchain technology, but they serve very different purposes. The key difference lies in that word: fungible.
Cryptocurrencies are fungible. One Bitcoin is identical in value and function to any other Bitcoin, just like our ten-dollar bills. This makes them great for transactions and storing value.

So how does an NFT actually work? This is where smart contracts come in.
A smart contract is a program stored on a blockchain that automatically runs when certain conditions are met. For an NFT, the smart contract contains all the important information: who created it, who owns it, and the rules for transferring it. When you buy or sell an NFT, the smart contract executes the transaction, updating the blockchain to show the new owner automatically and securely, without needing a middleman.
Think of a smart contract like a digital vending machine. If you put in the right amount of money (cryptocurrency), the machine automatically gives you the item you selected (the NFT).
