Introduction to NFTs

The New Digital Original

Imagine you have two one-dollar bills. If you swap one for the other, you still have the same value. They are interchangeable, or fungible. Now, imagine you have the original Mona Lisa. There is only one. You can't swap it for another Mona Lisa because no other exact original exists. It is non-fungible.

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) bring this concept of unique, irreplaceable value to the digital world. An NFT is a one-of-a-kind digital certificate, secured on a blockchain, that represents ownership of a unique item, whether it's a piece of digital art, a song, a video game item, or even a ticket to an event.

Non-fungible

adjective

Not interchangeable. An item that is unique and cannot be replaced with another identical item.

This solves a long-standing problem online: proving ownership of something that can be easily copied. You can screenshot a digital painting a million times, but only one person can own the NFT that certifies them as the owner of the original work.

Not Just Another Coin

It's common to confuse NFTs with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum, since they both use blockchain technology. However, their core purpose is fundamentally different. Cryptocurrencies are fungible. One Bitcoin is always equal to another Bitcoin, just like one dollar is equal to another.

NFTs, on the other hand, are all unique. Each one has a distinct digital signature and contains different information, making them non-interchangeable. Think of it like this: cryptocurrencies are the money you use, while NFTs are the unique items you can buy with that money.

How It All Works

The magic behind NFTs is blockchain technology. A blockchain is a decentralized, distributed ledger that records transactions in a way that is permanent and unchangeable (immutable). Instead of one company or bank controlling the records, the ledger is copied and spread across thousands of computers worldwide. This makes it incredibly secure and transparent.

When an NFT is created, or "minted," its information is stored on the blockchain. This information includes who created it, who has owned it, and who owns it now. This record can't be forged or altered.

This process is automated using smart contracts, which are self-executing programs stored on a blockchain. The smart contract for an NFT contains its unique properties and governs its transfer of ownership. It's like a digital deed and rulebook rolled into one, automatically enforcing the terms of ownership without needing an intermediary.

Because this information lives on a public blockchain, anyone can verify the authenticity and ownership history of an NFT. This transparency is what gives an NFT its power as a certificate of ownership.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are digital assets stored on a blockchain representing real-world objects such as art or collectibles.

The Rise of Digital Collectibles

NFTs first captured mainstream attention through the world of digital art and collectibles. Before NFTs, it was difficult to assign value to digital art because it could be endlessly duplicated. With NFTs, artists can create verifiably scarce works, and collectors can truly own them.

This led to a boom in the NFT market, with some digital artworks selling for millions of dollars. While the initial hype was centered on art, the underlying technology of providing verifiable digital ownership has opened the door for many other applications, which we'll explore later.
