Introduction to NFTs
What Are NFTs?
A Non-Fungible Token, or NFT, is a unique digital certificate that proves ownership of an asset, whether it's digital art, a piece of music, or even a ticket to an event. Think of it as a one-of-a-kind digital deed recorded on a secure public ledger.
The key to understanding NFTs is the term "non-fungible." It simply means something is unique and cannot be replaced with something else. For example, the Mona Lisa is non-fungible. There is only one original. You can take a photo of it or buy a print, but you can't swap it for the real thing.
In contrast, something that is "fungible" can be exchanged for an identical item. A dollar bill is fungible because you can trade it for any other dollar bill, and you'll still have one dollar. The value is the same.
Not Just Another Cryptocurrency
While NFTs and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin both use blockchain technology, they serve very different purposes. The main difference lies in that concept of fungibility.
Cryptocurrencies are designed to be fungible. One Bitcoin is always equal in value to another Bitcoin, just like dollars. This makes them useful as a medium of exchange. NFTs, on the other hand, are created to be unique. Each one has distinct information that makes it different from any other NFT, which is why they're used to represent ownership of specific, individual items.

The Blockchain Backbone
NFTs exist on a technology called a blockchain, which is essentially a shared digital ledger that is very difficult to alter. Imagine a notebook that's passed around a huge network of computers. Every time a transaction happens, a new entry is added to the notebook. All the computers in the network have a copy, so they all have to agree that the entry is valid before it's permanent.
This system has two crucial features: it's decentralized and immutable.
Decentralized: No single person or company controls the blockchain. It's maintained by the network of users, making it transparent and resistant to censorship.
Immutable: Once a transaction is recorded on the blockchain, it's set in stone. The records are linked together using cryptography, so changing one entry would mean changing all the subsequent entries, which is practically impossible.
This secure and transparent foundation is what gives NFTs their power. Because the record of ownership is stored on a decentralized and immutable blockchain, anyone can verify who owns a specific digital asset at any time. This creates a level of trust and authenticity that wasn't possible before for digital items.
