Game Structure
The Game Clock
An official NFL game is divided into four 15-minute quarters. That adds up to 60 minutes of total playing time. The first two quarters make up the first half, and the last two quarters make up the second half.
Between the second and third quarters, there's a 12-minute halftime break. This is when teams head to their locker rooms to rest, make strategic adjustments, and prepare for the second half. It's also when the famous halftime shows take place.
Keeping Time
If a game is only 60 minutes long, why does it take about three hours to watch? The answer is clock stoppages. The game clock doesn't run continuously. It frequently stops for various reasons, which extends the actual time of the event.

One of the most strategic stoppages is the timeout. Each team is given three timeouts per half, which they can use to stop the clock, rest players, or discuss strategy before a crucial play.
When 60 Minutes Isn't Enough
Sometimes, the score is tied when the 60 minutes of regulation time run out. This is when the game goes into overtime.
In the regular season, an overtime game can still end in a tie. In the playoffs, however, a winner must be decided, so teams will play until one comes out on top.
Overtime begins with another coin toss, just like the one at the start of the game, to decide who gets the ball first. The rules are designed to give both teams a fair shot.
If the team that gets the ball first scores a touchdown on their opening possession, they win the game. But if they only score a field goal, the other team gets a chance to possess the ball. If that second team scores a touchdown, they win. If they kick a field goal to tie it, the game continues, and the next score of any kind wins.
During the playoffs, these overtime periods continue until one team scores and the other has had a chance to match (unless the first score was a touchdown). This ensures that a champion can be crowned.
