This field emerged in the 1990s from the work of L. Michael Hall. It builds directly on another discipline you may have heard of: Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP.
Building on NLP
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is like the owner's manual for your brain. It provides tools and techniques for understanding how language (linguistic) affects our nervous system (neuro) and our patterns of behavior (programming). NLP focuses on the how of our experience. How do we create anxiety? How do we motivate ourselves? How do we build rapport with others?
NLP provides the tools to understand the structure of experience. Neuro-Semantics uses those tools to explore the quality and meaning of that experience.
Neuro-Semantics takes this a step further by asking why. It doesn't just look at the structure of our internal processes; it examines the higher-level meanings, beliefs, and intentions that drive those processes. If NLP is about how the engine runs, Neuro-Semantics is about the driver who decides where the car is going and why that destination is important.
