What Are Psychedelics?

Psychedelics are a class of substances that produce changes in perception, mood, and thought. When someone takes a psychedelic, they might experience the world in a very different way. Senses can feel heightened, thoughts can take unusual paths, and emotions can be amplified.

From the Greek words for "mind" (psyche) and "to reveal" (delos), meaning "mind-revealing." This term was coined to describe the ability of these substances to bring forth hidden aspects of the mind.

Most classic psychedelics, like LSD and psilocybin, work by influencing the brain's serotonin system. Serotonin is a chemical messenger that helps regulate mood, perception, and many other bodily functions. By interacting with specific serotonin receptors, psychedelics can temporarily change the brain's normal patterns of communication, leading to their unique effects.

A Journey Through History

The use of psychedelic plants is not new. For thousands of years, indigenous cultures around the world have used them in spiritual, healing, and community rituals. Peyote cactus in North America, psilocybin mushrooms in Mesoamerica, and ayahuasca brews in the Amazon are all examples of sacred plant medicines with deep historical roots.

A core goal is to recognize, explore, and contextualize contemporary psychedelics within the rich cultural history and Indigenous traditions that have stewarded these substances, acknowledging the debt that contemporary scientific research owes to these practices and knowledge.

Psychedelics entered Western culture in a big way during the 20th century. In 1938, a Swiss chemist named Albert Hofmann first synthesized lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD. He accidentally discovered its powerful effects five years later. This discovery kicked off a period of intense scientific research into psychedelics as potential tools for therapy and for understanding the mind.

By the 1960s, these substances had moved from the lab into the counterculture, where they became symbols of social change and rebellion. This widespread, unregulated use led to a moral panic and a political backlash.

These drugs became a mainstream area of research following the synthesis of LSD; however, several political and social factors led to their ban in 1966, after which research on psychedelics remained limited.

For decades, research was effectively frozen. But in recent years, there has been a significant resurgence of scientific interest. Researchers at top universities are now studying psychedelics for their potential to treat conditions like depression, PTSD, and addiction, sparking what many call a "psychedelic renaissance."

Common Types of Psychedelics

While there are many different psychedelic compounds, a few are particularly well-known.

Psilocybin: This is the active compound in what are often called "magic mushrooms." Psilocybin-containing fungi grow naturally all over the world and have a long history of ritual use, particularly in Central and South America. Today, psilocybin is one of the most studied psychedelics for its therapeutic potential.

LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide): This is a potent, synthetic psychedelic created in a lab. It doesn't occur in nature. LSD is known for producing long-lasting experiences that can be intensely visual and introspective. It became famous during the 1960s counterculture movement.

DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine): Often called the "spirit molecule," DMT is found in many plants and even in trace amounts in the human brain. When smoked or vaporized, it produces a very powerful but short-lived experience. It is also the key psychedelic ingredient in the traditional Amazonian brew known as ayahuasca.

These are just a few examples. Other psychedelics include mescaline (from the peyote cactus), MDMA (often called ecstasy or molly, which has both psychedelic and stimulant properties), and ketamine (a dissociative anesthetic with psychedelic effects at certain doses).
