The Building Blocks of an Economy
Everything we build, create, and consume starts with something from the Earth. These foundational materials are called natural resources. They are the raw ingredients that fuel our societies and economies, from the water we drink to the metals in our phones.

Think of an economy as a giant workshop. Natural resources are the supplies stacked on the shelves. Without them, there's nothing to build with. They are the basis for food, shelter, energy, and nearly every product we use.
Renewable vs. Non-Renewable
Natural resources fall into two main categories based on how quickly they can be replaced.
Renewable resources are those that replenish themselves over time. Forests can regrow, fish populations can reproduce, and sunlight is a constant source of energy. They are like a bank account that earns interest; if you only spend the interest, you'll never run out of money.
Non-renewable resources exist in fixed amounts. Once they're used, they're gone for good—or at least, for millions of years. This category includes fossil fuels like coal and oil, as well as minerals like iron and copper. They are like a one-time inheritance; you have to be careful how you spend it.

Why Management Matters

Even renewable resources have their limits. If we cut down forests faster than they can regrow or catch fish faster than they can reproduce, we can deplete them. This is known as the 'tragedy of the commons.'
Sustainable management involves finding a balance. For renewable resources, it means setting harvest limits and protecting ecosystems to ensure they stay healthy and productive. For non-renewable resources, it means using them efficiently, recycling whenever possible, and developing alternative technologies that rely on more abundant or renewable inputs.
