Natan Sharansky was born on January 20, 1948, in the city of Stalino, now known as Donetsk, Ukraine. He grew up in a Jewish family during the height of the Soviet Union. His father, Boris Shcharansky, was a journalist who held Zionist sympathies, a risky position to take at the time. His mother was Ida Milgrom.
