For a professional, this is a daily reality. But if your chart is written with specific chords like G, C, and D, you have to mentally transpose every single chord on the fly. Developed in the late 1950s and perfected in the 60s, the NNS is credited to Neal Matthews Jr. of The Jordanaires, the vocal group famous for backing Elvis Presley. The solution was surprisingly simple: stop naming the chords and start numbering them instead.

How It Works
