Introduction to Narendra's Life

From Humble Beginnings

Narendra Modi was born on September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, a small town in Gujarat, India. He was the third of six children born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and Hiraben Modi. His family belonged to the Ghanchi community, an oil-presser caste, and their financial situation was modest. His father ran a small tea stall at the local railway station, where a young Narendra would often help out.

This early exposure to the diverse cross-section of people passing through the station gave him a unique window into the lives and struggles of everyday Indians. Growing up, he was described as an average student but a keen debater with a strong interest in theatre and politics. From a young age, he was involved with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization, which played a significant role in shaping his ideology and worldview.

An Unconventional Education

Modi’s educational path was not a straight line. After completing his higher secondary education in Vadnagar, he left home at the age of 17. He spent two years traveling across India, visiting various ashrams and religious centers. This period of spiritual exploration was a formative experience, deepening his understanding of the country's cultural and spiritual diversity.

He later pursued formal education through distance learning, balancing his studies with his full-time work as an RSS promoter. In 1978, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the School of Open Learning at the University of Delhi. He continued his studies and, in 1983, obtained a Master of Arts degree in political science from Gujarat University.

Early Professional Life

After his travels, Modi returned to Gujarat and became a full-time worker, or pracharak, for the RSS in 1971. This was his first major professional role. It was an unpaid position that demanded complete dedication, involving extensive travel, organizing events, and spreading the organization's ideology. This work honed his organizational skills and gave him a grassroots understanding of political mobilization.

During the State of Emergency imposed in India from 1975 to 1977, Modi went underground to avoid arrest, organizing protests and distributing pamphlets critical of the government. This experience was a crucible, strengthening his political resolve.

His efficiency and organizational acumen did not go unnoticed. In 1985, the RSS assigned him to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), its political wing. This marked his formal entry into mainstream politics. He started as an organization secretary for the BJP's Gujarat unit, where his strategic planning was instrumental in strengthening the party's presence in the state. This initial role set the stage for his eventual rise through the political ranks.
