Start with the End in Mind

When building a house, you don't start by buying a pile of lumber and figuring it out as you go. You start with a blueprint, a clear vision of the final structure. Designing a course works the same way. The most effective approach is to begin with a simple question: What should students be able to know, understand, and do by the end of this course?

This method is called backward design. Instead of listing all the topics you want to cover and then creating tests, you reverse the process. You start with your destination—the learning goals—and work backward to plan the journey.

The backward design method emphasizes planning lessons by starting with the end in mind, focusing on desired learning outcomes rather than content delivery alone.

This framework has three key stages:

  1. Identify Desired Results: First, define your learning objectives. These are clear, specific statements about what students will be able to do. For example, instead of a vague goal like "Learn about the American Revolution," a strong objective would be "Analyze the primary causes of the American Revolution."

  2. Determine Acceptable Evidence: Next, figure out how you'll know if students have met those objectives. This is where you think about assessment. What task will demonstrate their ability to analyze the causes of the revolution? An essay, a debate, or a project would be much better evidence than a multiple-choice quiz about dates and names.

  3. Plan Learning Experiences: Only after you know your destination and how you'll check for arrival do you plan the route. Here, you select the instructional strategies, activities, and resources that will help students acquire the knowledge and skills they need to succeed on the assessment.

Ensuring Everything Connects

The second core principle of course design is alignment. This means creating a direct, clear link between your learning objectives, your assessments, and your teaching activities. Every piece of your course should serve a purpose and connect to the other pieces.

Think of it like a three-legged stool. If the objectives, assessments, and activities aren't aligned, the stool is wobbly and the learning experience is unstable.

When a course is well-aligned, students understand why they are doing a particular assignment. They see how reading a specific chapter or participating in a lab helps them prepare for the exam, and how that exam measures a key skill the course is supposed to teach. This transparency builds trust and motivates students, as they can see that their effort is directed toward meaningful goals.

An aligned course has no wasted motion. Every assessment directly measures a stated objective. Every activity is designed to build the skills needed for that assessment. This simple but powerful concept is the key to creating a cohesive and effective learning experience.

Mapping the Journey

Once you have your objectives and a plan for assessment, how do you organize everything? This is where curriculum mapping comes in. A curriculum map is a visual table or chart that shows how the components of your course fit together over time.

At its most basic, a map tracks the topics, learning objectives, and assessments for each week or unit of your course. Creating one helps you see the entire curriculum at a glance, making it easy to check for a logical sequence of topics, ensure all objectives are covered, and balance the workload across the semester.
