Lossless formats, like WAV and AIFF, contain all of the original audio information from the recording. They offer the highest possible quality but result in very large files. This is the standard for professional studio work and archiving.
Lossy formats, like MP3 and AAC, use compression to reduce the file size. This process removes some audio data that the human ear is least likely to notice. While the quality is slightly reduced, the smaller file size makes them perfect for streaming, downloading, and storing on portable devices.
