Understanding YouTube Monetization

The Path to Getting Paid

The most common way to earn money on YouTube is by joining the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). This program allows creators to run ads on their videos and get a share of the revenue. Think of it as YouTube paying you for bringing an audience to their platform.

Getting into the YPP isn't automatic. YouTube wants to see that you have a consistent audience and that you're creating content that people actually watch. This is where the eligibility requirements come in.

Joining the Partner Program

To apply for the YPP, your channel needs to meet specific thresholds. These numbers show YouTube that you've built a real community around your content. There are two main paths to qualify.

To qualify for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), you need at least 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 public watch hours in the past 12 months or 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days.

The watch hours must come from your regular, long-form videos. Shorts views don't count toward the 4,000-hour requirement, but they offer their own path to entry. Once you hit these numbers, you can apply through the "Earn" tab in your YouTube Studio. Your channel will then be reviewed to make sure it follows all of YouTube's policies, like the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. This review process ensures that the content being monetized is appropriate for advertisers.

Setting Up Google AdSense

Before you can get paid, you need a way to receive the money. That's where Google AdSense comes in. AdSense is Google's advertising network that places ads on your videos and processes payments to you. You can't be in the YPP without it.

When you apply for the YPP, you'll be prompted to link an AdSense account. If you already have one, you can connect it. If not, you can create a new one as part of the application process. It's crucial to only have one AdSense account in your name.

After your AdSense account is set up and your channel is approved for the YPP, you'll need to verify your personal information. This includes confirming your address by mail (they send you a postcard with a PIN) and providing your tax information. Once you reach the payment threshold (for example, $100 in the US), AdSense will send your earnings to your bank account.

How Ads Work on Videos

Once you're in the YPP, you can start turning on ads for your videos. You have control over which videos you monetize. When you enable ads for a video, YouTube's system automatically places them where they fit best. Advertisers bid to show their ads on channels like yours, and you get a portion of what they pay.

There are several different ad formats you'll see on YouTube.

Ad TypeDescriptionWhen It Appears
Skippable in-stream adsViewers can skip the ad after 5 seconds. Before, during, or after the video.
Non-skippable in-stream ads15-20 second ads that must be watched in full. Before, during, or after the video.
Bumper adsShort, non-skippable ads up to 6 seconds long. Before the video.
Display adsImage or text ads that appear next to the video.Desktop only.

To maximize your ad revenue, focus on creating advertiser-friendly content. This means making videos that are appropriate for a wide audience and don't touch on sensitive or controversial topics that might scare advertisers away. YouTube's automated system reviews every video to determine its suitability for ads. The more advertiser-friendly your content is, the more ads will be eligible to run on it, increasing your potential earnings.

For videos that are longer than 8 minutes, you also get the option to place ads during the video, known as mid-rolls. You can let YouTube place these automatically for the best user experience, or you can manually place them yourself. If you choose to do it manually, try to place them at natural breaks in your content, like between segments, to avoid disrupting the viewer's experience.

Now, let's test what you've learned about getting your channel monetized.
