This was crucial because it acknowledged that a person could be physically capable of arousal but have no interest in sex, a common issue seen in clinical practice.

While Kaplan's model added a vital psychological layer, it still presented a linear path. But for many, especially women, the experience isn't always so straightforward.

A Circular Journey

Further research, particularly by Rosemary Basson, challenged the linear models, especially as they apply to female sexual response in long-term relationships. Basson proposed a circular model where desire isn't always the starting point. Instead, the cycle can begin with a need for intimacy or a willingness to become receptive to stimulation.

In this model, emotional intimacy can lead a person to engage in sexual activity. The resulting physical arousal then triggers sexual desire. This is a key insight: arousal can come before desire. If the experience is physically and emotionally satisfying, it enhances the original sense of intimacy, making a person more receptive the next time. Everyone has a unique combination of sensitivity in their SES and SIS. Someone with a high-SES and low-SIS might become aroused easily and in many situations. In contrast, a person with a high-SIS might need very specific conditions—low stress, high trust—to feel aroused.
